Why Does Coffee Make You Stay Awake?
Posted on 25. Sep, 2009 by Russell Jackson.
You’re no doubt aware that coffee can keep you awake. And you probably understand that it’s the caffeine content that causes this effect. What you probably don’t know, though, is why it is that caffeine can keep you awake. So what is it specifically about caffeine that stops you going to sleep?
Actually what caffeine does is to suppress the chemical in the brain that helps us to sleep. Scary as it sounds, caffeine serves to temporarily alter the chemical makeup of the brain, and leads to a naturally-occurring chemical, adenosine, not being able to do its job properly.
Adenosine is produced naturally in the body as a result of our daily routine. Our brains feature adenosine receptors, that this chemical binds itself to, which helps to slow down our brain’s nerve cell activity, leading us to get drowsy and fall asleep.
We’re more used to the effect of exercise being chemicals that make you feel more awake, so it seems strange that adenosine has the opposite effect. One of the other effects of this adenosine binding, though, is to dilate the blood vessels, allowing more oxygen to get to the brain – an effect we do expect from exercise and physical activity.
Nerve cells perceive caffeine as being similar in makeup to adenosine, so they allow it to bind to the adenosine receptors in the same manner. The effect is the opposite to what they expect, however, with caffeine serving to block the adenosine and thus increase nerve cell activity, rather than slow it down.
At the same time, caffeine leads to blood vessels contracting, rather than dilating, which restricts the flow of blood cells. This is why certain types of headache respond well to remedies that include caffeine, as more of the blood cells causing the pain are prevented from reaching the brain.
So with the adenosine being blocked by the caffeine, there is increased neuron activity in the brain. This triggers a “fight or flight” reaction, as the body thinks there must be some sort of emergency situation causing this increased neural activity, and releases hormones to create adrenalin.
It’s obvious that an adrenaline boost is the last thing you need when you want to get to sleep – causing, as it does, increased heart rate tensing of the muscles, and leading you to feel excited – which explains why it is that caffeine keeps you awake.

Cuts of Steak You Can Afford this Summer
Posted on 24. Sep, 2009 by Kc Kudra.
We all love grilling, but tight budgets are making a good steak seem a lot more difficult for many of us. If you are worried about whether or not that great steak is in reach this year, the answer is definitely a yes, as long as you know your steaks. All kinds of cuts of beef are available that will grill up well without being too hard on your budget. While they will take a little more care in cooking than your favorite tenderloin, they can be really worthwhile. So, if you love steak, do not give up hope on an affordable one.
There are bargains in your meat case, and good steak can be had for five to seven dollars a pound. Hanger and flatiron steaks, tri tip, skirt, flap and flank steaks, and chuck, top sirloin and other types of meat are all inexpensive and delicious, provided you know what to do with them.
Remember that these steaks are cheaper for a reason, which means it will take a little more work to make them taste as good as the really expensive cuts. However, it is not all that hard if you take the time to suit the cooking method to the steak. Being a good cook can save you money in the long run.
The tough texture in these steaks is because they come from muscles the animal actually uses. That makes them more flavorful than some of the more tender cuts. These are the ones that have the best flavor and the least gristle. An intense marinade, some careful salting, and a close eye on your grill time can help these bargain cuts taste and feel their best.
First, look at the marinades. These are liquid mixtures that are said to be able to infuse flavor and tenderize, but sometimes, they can do the opposite. Much of the time, they just soak in a little, and overly acidic marinades will tighten muscle fiber. That doesnt mean you dont want to use a marinade, even if youre new enough to the kitchen that youre asking what cut of meat do steak tips come from. You just need to use them right.
Even if the effect you’re getting is only skin deep, marinades result in a lovely surface that is crisp, crusty, and rich in color, and they add some nice flavor to the outside of your steak. Use a really hot grill to create the best steak you can. Remove budget steaks from the fridge while the grill is still heating up. That will ensure that your meat is not cold when it goes on the grill, and it will cook more thoroughly.
You’ll want two zones of heat – one that’s hotter and allows for searing the meat, and the other that’s lower in heat and will cook evenly with no burnt outside. A gas grill makes this a matter of adjusting knobs, while charcoal requires you to bank about two thirds of the coals and scatter the rest.
You will want to make sure your grill is clean at all times, and that you are being patient enough. It is important to cook these cuts of meat in an undisturbed location for two to three minutes at least. Use an instant read thermometer to tell you when the meat is done, and be sure to rest it when it is finished so it will retain the juices.

Body Fat Obesity And Cancer
Posted on 23. Sep, 2009 by Rita Goldman.
Mens body fat and womens body fat are different; it always seems easier for a man to shed weight than a woman. He has to stop drinking beer for a month, go out for a few walks after dinner and do a few hours a week on a cross trainer or rowing machine. Some women virtually starve themselves and eat just what their body needs to lose weight and they hang onto that fat for dear life.
The difference is estrogen dominance, which means either the body produces too much of the estrogen hormones or not enough progesterone to balance it. Even women with exceptionally low estrogen levels can have estrogen dominant symptoms if her body does not manufacture progesterone.
In the past all of these hormonal imbalances were treated by stuffing more hormones into the body. However recently it has been apparent that women have an individual and unique hormonal pattern. One of the quirks of our body is that if we treat estrogen imbalance with progesterone and the body gets too much progesterone it can be metabolized into estrogen, thus exacerbating the very problems that it is designed to cure.
While the correct balance of hormones is important, endocrine specialists have been looking at achieving a hormonal balance naturally. Diindolyimethane is an anti cancerous nutrient founds in the cruciferous family of vegetables which are broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage amongst others. Edible plants in the Cruciferae family are Cruciferous vegetables. They are all high in vitamin C and soluble fiber and contain multiple nutrients with anti cancer properties which include diindolylmethane, sulforaphane and selenium.
Unfortunately, it is not a simple matter or just eating more cruciferous vegetables, although diindolylmethane is released when the plants are chewed. Medical research had illustrated that it would be necessary to eat a kilo of vegetables in the cruciferous family each day to get the benefit of diindolylmethane. For many people this is an unrealistic amount, although it does attest to the fact that at least ten portions of fresh fruit and vegetables are required every day to get the amount of required diindolylmethane
Many people find the diindolylmethane or DIM supplements are a better way of ingesting the nutrients of the cruciferous family. Once this has been achieved then the symptoms of hormonal estrogen dominance has gone.

Did We Discover The Fountain of Youth With Resveratrol?
Posted on 22. Sep, 2009 by Dorsey Hawkins.
I’m sure by now you’ve heard of Resveratrol if you’ve been searching for an anti aging product. Known as an anti aging wonder, resveratrol has actually been around for many centuries. But more attention has been given to it because of its powerful antioxidant attributes.
How was Resveratrol discovered? Studies were coming in from the people of France, China and Japan that their reports showed far less cardiovascular diseases compared to other parts of the world. Their secret? A large quantity of the red grape, cranberries, blueberries, mulberries and red wine in their diets.
Resveratrol turns out to be a very potent antioxidant and with it comes a host of health benefits such as the aiding and prevention of many diseases including cancer, diabetes, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease among others.
Although most of the studies involving resveratrol had been performed in mice and not in humans, amazing proof is being revealed that it has the same benefits in humans without any reports of side effects.
But be sure to ask your doctor before starting resveratrol if you are on blood thinning medications.
But the real reason most women seek resveratrol I think is because of its anti aging compound. Every woman desires to look younger than she really is and this antioxidant miracle product may be her answer.
Confirmed studies show that resveratrol is controlling the aging of skin cells and making wrinkles and age spots disappear! And if that wasn’t enough, resveratrol is also known for increased energy, which in turn is linked to substantial weight loss.
Renowned Dermatologist, Dr. Nicholas Perricone says, “Antioxidants can impede and even repair the damage to skin cells that come with aging, and soft, radiant and younger-looking skin is the gratifying result.”
We all know that red wine has antioxidants but there’s a better way to get your daily dosage. You can take resveratrol as a supplement in pill form which is better than drinking your way to health. In fact it is known that a daily dose of resveratrol is equal to the antioxidant benefits of 1,000 bottles of red wine!
